Founded 1969 as Higher School of Pedagogy. Reorganized as Pedagogical University 1973, named after Jan Kochanowski 1979, became Uniwersytet Humanistyczno-Przyrodniczego Jana Kochanowskiego w Kielcach in 2008, and acquired current title 2011.
