Founded 1903 in Damascus as Medical Institute. Institute of Law founded in Beirut 1912, both re-established in Damascus 1919, and Arabic replaced Turkish as medium of instruction. Merged to become the Syrian University 1923. New Faculties established 1946 and Technological Institute incorporated as Faculty 1972. Present title acquired 1958. A State Institution responsible to the Ministry of Higher Education.
