Founded 1453 following the conquest of Istanbul by the Turks. Faculty of Medicine established 1827, and Darülfünun for teaching the Positive Sciences 1863. Reorganized 1924 and 1933 as a secular Institution. Under the laws of 1946 and 1973 the Universities were guaranteed administrative and academic and financial autonomy. Reorganized 1982 following the Higher Education Reform.
