Founded 1318 as a 'studium generale', acquired statutes 1570, and was incorporated by Act of Parliament 1571. Statutes revised 1872 by statutory commissions. The University is complemented by 31 independent self-governing Colleges (see below). All lectures and other public teaching are organized by the University. The Colleges are responsible for arranging individual teaching of their students by College supervisors. Degrees are awarded by the University.
