Founded 1853 as Seminary of Learning, became Louisiana State Seminary of Learning and Military Academy 1860, and Louisiana State University (LSU) 1870. Merged 1877 with Louisiana State Agricultural and Mechanical College (founded 1874). The oldest and largest institution in the LSU System. (The Paul M. Hebert Law Centre is a separate campus of the System).
