Founded 1970 under the 1968 law reforming higher education and replacing former Université de Clermont-Ferrand, founded 1854 as Faculty of Letters and Faculty of Science. In 1976, the University l’Université de Clermont-Ferrand split into 2 institutions: Clermont I (law, economic and medical sciences) and Clermont II (letters, science and technology). Acquired current title 1987. A State Institution enjoying academic and financial autonomy, operating under the jurisdiction of the Minister of Education and financed by the State.
