Founded 1973, formerly part of Université de Lyon II and tracing its origins to the former Université de Lyon, founded 1809 as Faculties of Letters, Science and Theology, although the origin of higher education in Lyon may be traced back to a Papal Bull of 1245. Constituted as University 1896. A State institution enjoying academic and financial autonomy, operating under the jurisdiction of the Minister of Education and financed by the State.
