Founded 1872 as Hungarian Royal University of Kolozsvar. Renamed Ferencz-Joseph University of Kolozvar 1881, moved to Szeged, 1921. In 1940 the university was divided into two institutions, one in Kolozsvar and one remained in Szeged, they were reorganized and became Szeged University 1945, named after József Attila 1962. Due to changes in the Hungarian higher education system, 'József Attila' University Szeged, 'Albert Szent-Györgyi Medical University Szeged, and 'Juhász Gyula' Teacher's Training College, Szeged merged as University of Szeged 2000.
